Nerdfighter Benedict? Or just failed Vulcan?

As far as I can tell, there are eight possibilities here. (I’ve spent a fair bit of time thinking about this.)

1. Benedict Cumberbatch is a hardcore nerdfighter and when Martin Freeman threw up a gang sign, Cumberbatch was like, “I have one of those.”

2. Cumberbatch, who obviously has a relationship with Star Trek, just naturally changed the Vulcan sign (pulling in the thumbs, turning the palms inward, crossing the arms) in precisely the same way that I happened to change the Vulcan sign when I first made the nerdfighter sign in the halcyon days of 2007.

3. One of the interns on set who has gained the trust of Benedict Cumberbatch was like, “If you do your hands like this, the Internet will get really excited.” And so he did.

4. BBC, in their infinite wisdom, staged the entire photo and Cumberbatch was taught the nerdfighter sign (I MEAN LOOK AT THE PERFECTION OF HIS NERDFIGHTER SIGN! He seems so comfortable and confident in it, almost as if it is muscle memory, almost as if he has flashed it to his laptop screen on hundreds of occasions in the past, but I digress) and this photograph was staged to get people psyched for Sherlock, although what tiny segment of nerdfighteria is not already psyched for Sherlock? Also, if this is the case, who is Martin Freeman trying to advertise to? Residents of the West Side?

5. Benedict Cumberbatch has a relative or a friend who is a nerdfighter and so he is passingly familiar with nerdfighteria and liked what he has seen and wanted to make us all very happy.

6. The nerdfighter sign also happens to be the hand sign of some obscure English gang with which I am unfamiliar called like The East London Wanderers or The Slightly Intimidating Liverpudlians or whatever.

7. Nerdfighteria actually figures in the plot of the new season of Sherlock. Perhaps a nerdfighter has been (wrongly no doubt!) accused of a murder.

8. Benedict Cumberbatch was playing some kind of British version of Rock Paper Scissors against two invisible opponents, and he went double scissors (as any smart person would).

Hi, I saw your post from last week about being a woman in engineering. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it really sounds like you were on an FRC (or FTC?) team. I just joined this year (my senior year of high school), so I can't speak about it with too much expertise, but my team has the exact same problem as yours. Everything is run by white males. There are too many girls on my team who joined as aspiring engineers and have been shoved to outreach, finance, imagery, and so on. It's disheartening.

Continuation: I was pretty insistent on being on the build team, but once there I just ended up drilling holes and sawing axles when people needed someone to do it. Two other girls who joined the team after me are now on build team too. Both of them are very assertive, competitive people. I am not. I’d like to think maybe it’s my introversion more than my two X chromosomes that largely excluded me from building, or hell, but one of the other girls – a freshman – has all but given up after this year’s season. The group of white guys who make up our build team are always saying that we can join in their discussions whenever we want, but that’s not really true. I mean, mostly they just have shouting contests. FRC was my first experience with the actual world of STEM, and I have to say it did quite a lot to turn me off of engineering. I’ll only be a freshman at university next year, so I have plenty of time to figure out what’s right for me, but I would really appreciate your thoughts on the subject.

I’m really saddened to hear about your experience with FRC. Unfortunately, this was the attitude of several of the boys on my team, and it did cause me to have a lack of confidence, but it really is not what FIRST is about at all. I don’t believe that I would have been able to be where I am if it weren’t for my experience on Robotics in high school.

Just to be clear, even though it is difficult to be a woman engineer, and even though there are those who doubt me, there are any people in the professional world who are very supportive and encouraging. One of the biggest resources I’ve found in school is SWE - the Society of Women Engineers. This is a society entirely dedicated to actively encouraging women engineers. You don’t have to be a woman or an engineer to join - you just have to share the goal of encouraging women to “Aspire, Advance, and Acheive” in the field of engineering.

Additionally, many of the people I have met that are currently working as engineers are highly supportive as well. The head of the Electrical Engineering department at my school (a white man, by the way) has expressed how disappointed he is that girls are not encouraged to pursue STEM in the same ways boys are. Many professors have recognized my merit, and I do not feel discriminated by the staff at my school at all.

Yes, there are still disheartening times when some of the other students in my classes underestimate me, but there is a lot of hope when you look for it. If you do want to pursue STEM still, I would encourage joining SWE and finding any encouraging faculty members at your school. And you can reach out to me any time that you need to as well.

If you decide not to pursue it because it’s just not for you, that’s ok too. I just hope that it’s not because a few stupid people made you feel like you couldn’t do it.
